Carrathool compost proposal to use cotton trash

Posted 28 Dec 2015, 8:43am

A composting facility proposed for Carrathool is set to make use of a cotton by-product that's currently left to rot on the ground.

Cotton trash from the RivCott gin near Carrathool currently has no use, but WormTech plans to enter into a five year lease to establish a facility on the cotton gin site to make use of the by-product.

The company already produces compost products at Yenda.

The application says cotton trash - the leaves, sticks and soil cleaned from the cotton lint - would be mixed in windrows with green waste, fruit and vegetable waste from local packing sheds and processing plants, along with manure from piggeries, chicken broiler sheds and cattle studs.

Up to 20,000 tonnes of compost would be produced per year.

The composting method takes about two months and the end product would be offered to RivCott shareholders and sold to local farmers.

Although there are six houses with four kilometres of the site of the proposed composting facility, an environmental impact statement says dust or odour impacts are not expected.

Submissions can be lodged until February 3 with Murrumbidgee Shire Council.
